This tour, just an hour's drive from Vancouver, is truly worth the journey, as it affords an immersion closer to the natural environment that is the wealth of British Columbia.
A cable car takes you to 885 metres above sea level in just 8 minutes and oversees Howe Sound, Shannon Falls, lush coastal forest, and the surrounding mountains. Several viewing platforms are installed and many hiking trails are signposted. A shuttle system has been set up from Canada Place in downtown Vancouver if you are not motorised. The ride there is already a fabulous journey as the road to Squamish passes through sublime landscapes. Logging has long been the mainstay of the region, but today many neo-rurals wishing to escape the high cost of the city move to this region while continuing to work in Vancouver. It is easy to understand what attracts them.
But if you want to watch loggers—real loggers—attend the Loggers Sports Festival, an amazing international championship of chainsaws, axe-throwing contests, and tree cutting, which takes place here each summer.
