Bologna is the first western university. As soon as 1088, students from all over the world gathered to learn from the most influential teachers of the time, who would teach grammar, rhetoric, oriental studies, mathematics and medicine. Besides some great teachers, History now remembers above all things the names of various students who became figureheads in literature, arts and science, like Petrach, Copernicus, Dürer, Paracelsus, Pico della Mirandola, and Tasso.
A true talents factory, the University of Bologna located during the 16th century at the heart of the Archiginnasio Palazzo. The building has now become a huge library that shelters thousands of old texts and manuscripts. It is also possible to discover the coats of arms of the richest students' families that have been linked to the establishment. Do not miss the visit of the anatomical theatre, in which the first studies on the human body were performed in Europe, thus allowing for major scientific progress.
