Discover Catania's Cathedral

Catania's most impressive building stands proud on the Piazza del Duomo. Today a consecrated cathedral, it used to be a fortress-church against Saracen invasions.

The sumptuous Baroque façade of the Sant'Agata Cathedral is the work of Sicilian architect Vaccarini. It majestically overlooks the elephant of the famous Fontana dell'Elefante in front.
Observe the Aragonese sovereigns' coat of arms on the sublime solid wood doorway. Also of interest is the story of Saint Agathe, a young virgin martyr who gave her name to the cathedral and whose relics have been preserved on the premises. One of the chapels houses the tomb of Vincenzo Bellini and the sarcophaguses of three Aragonese kings.
Built towards the end of the 11th century by order of Normand Roger I where former Roman baths stood, the structure had to be almost entirely reconstructed after the terrible 1693 earthquake. Only the two towers and the transept withstood the shock. On one side of the façade, you can make out the lava stone semi-circular apses. Collect your thoughts or simply let go of everything while the piece that reigns inside wins you over.
