Syracuse, land of wonders

Situated in the southeast of Sicily, Syracuse is renowned for its ancient ruins and Baroque architecture. Since 2005, its historical centre has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The birthplace of mathematician Archimedes, who lived in 3rd century B.C., is a major spot of any trip to Sicily. Take a few moments to admire the impressive natural spectacle of Syracuse, its impressive and unobstructed views of the Ionian Sea. For a cultural break, visit the numerous Baroque churches of Spanish influence, the Duomo and its Greek look, as well as the various Gothic palazzi. Dozens of food specialities will titillate your taste buds, like the caponata - a regional dish made of eggplant, tomato, celery, vinegar and sugar - or the famous panelle, those little rolls made of chickpea flour.
Do not pass by a shopping session! You will have a large choice of luxury and small designer boutiques, as well as souvenir shops. And finally, you'll find refreshing and relaxing spots with spread out stretches of white sand and untouched coves, in the Vendicari natural reserve. Heaven on earth!
